In this one-and-a-half day retreat, Zen Master Dae Kwan (Sifu) explained to us the Four Stages and 16 Steps of the Anapana-sati (breathing) practice of the Theravada tradition, pointing to us the differences and similarities of this and our Zen practice. Sifu hoped that, through learning the basics of Anapana-sati, we could improve our sitting practice, so as to be able to ultimately perceive Impermanence, Suffering, No-Self, Emptiness, and Suchness. Sifu also reminded us that, as Zen students, we should also live out the Bodhisattva Way, apart from working for our own liberation.
