Picking up and putting down

A student shared his insight with everyone during the last lesson of the Introduction to Zen class.

Student: I asked Sifu previously about how to let go of a relationship💔. Sifu did not respond to my question with words at that time, but instead asked me to put a round cushion on my head and then stand up and walk around🚶‍➡️~ I didn’t understand what that meant then.

Later, I figured it out. You have to go with the flow of cause and effect, without clinging or doing anything further. In the end, surprisingly I was actually able to maintain the relationship with that friend with some distance with which we both felt comfortable and at ease 🌱. So I am very grateful for Zen Master’s teaching that day.

(Everyone clapped)

Sifu: (Smiling after listening) Now, pick up a cushion again.

Student: (Picks up a cushion)

Sifu: Then slowly put it down.

Student: (Releases his hands, the cushion falls on the ground)

Sifu: Correct✅! Relationships are just like this. Pick them up when you need to, and put them down when you need to. This way, you can keep a distance with the cushion - you can use it for sitting meditation when you want to sit, and you can use it for sleeping when you want to sleep.
