Zen Master Seung Sahn opened his first zen center in Providence, Rhode Island. The area was fairly violent with drunken brawls and knife fights. The atmosphere was unhappy. At that time Zen Master Seung Sahn was totally independent and self-financed. He started everything from zero. There was no furniture except for a small kitchen table and a few wooden chairs.

One student was negatively emotional with lots of anger. After practicing for a while, his character improved much, but still sometimes his karma controlled him. One day, he asked Sifu for advice.

Fresh breeze with every step

The realm of Buddha is nothing but to wake up to here and now. How to do that? First is to keep our mind clear. For beginners, clear mind is very short. With constant practice, our clear mind grows wider and clearer, clear not only like a mirror but like space. This universe can embrace everything. It’s the same with our mind. Even when we have this clear, wide mind, many things are still going on…coming and going, enjoyment and suffering, favorable and disgusting… It is like how in the clear sky there are aeroplanes, birds, lightening and thunderstorm. We have to allow them — our emotions and situations — to appear and to manifest without holding on to them or running away from them. Everything happens according to its time and place. Nothing is an accident. If we have this attitude in life, then we can experience what is freedom without hindrance. And we can experience every step with a fresh breeze.

For the Year of the Dragon
In 1976, the Year of the Dragon, Zen Master Seung Sahn had written a poem like this :

Here is Jin, which is Truth.
Jin Song means True Pine Tree-
True Pine Tree has no roots.
Jin Kwang means True Light-
True Light has no shadow.

Jin Um means True Sound-
That is the sound of the flute with no holes.
What does it mean?
If you find the dragon's tooth hair
Then show it to me;
Then I'll tell you that 1976
Is the year of the Dragon.

2012 is also a dragon year. How can the above poem help us in this year of 2012?

The Whole World Is A Single Flower

After 1912 the Japanese were trying to crush Korean culture, language, religion. Part of that strategy was to control Korean Buddhism since it was seen as a force of resistance. One way they did that was to call the abbots of all the governing temples to Seoul to have meeting together.

There is no place for you to stay
